In poor countries the distance between two places is measured by the time it takes to make the journey, not the actual distance. Then, if it rains, distance is increased by a lot. The Congo emphasizes that. Here are some photos of one of those roads.

One fascinating aspect of the road from Kindu to Kasongo is that as you travel the 240 or so kilometers south from Kindu you move from thick jungle into more open savanna. You move out of that thick green belt that characterizes central Africa.

This is the jungle part.

And this is the savanna part.

This bridge was intact.

Thus allowing a lovely view of a tributary to the Congo.

But the bridge over this river was out, thus allowing a nice trip through the river.
